5 Common Causes of Lower Back Pain in Desk Workers

Lower back pain in desk workers

If you spend most of your day sitting at a desk, there’s a good chance your lower back has let you know about it. Desk-related back pain is one of the most common complaints we see at our clinic. Here are the five biggest culprits.

1. Prolonged Sitting

The human spine wasn’t designed for 8+ hours of sitting. Over time, this sustained compression can restrict joint movement, weaken the muscles that support the spine, and create a cycle of stiffness and pain that gets progressively worse.

The fix isn’t to never sit — it’s to break up long sitting periods. Standing up, walking around, or doing a quick stretch every 30–45 minutes can make a significant difference.

2. Poor Ergonomics

Your desk setup matters more than you think. A monitor that’s too low forces you to hunch forward. A chair without lumbar support allows your lower back to round. A keyboard that’s too far away pulls your shoulders forward and increases the load on the thoracolumbar junction.

Small adjustments — raising your monitor to eye level, adding lumbar support, and keeping your feet flat on the floor — can dramatically reduce the mechanical stress on your spine.

3. Weak Core Muscles

Your core muscles (not just the “six-pack” muscles, but the deep stabilizers including the transverse abdominis and multifidus) act as a natural brace for your spine. When these muscles are weak or disengaged — which happens quickly with prolonged sitting — your spine relies more heavily on passive structures like discs, ligaments, and joint capsules for support. That’s a recipe for lower back pain.

4. Restricted Spinal Joints

When you sit in the same position for hours, the joints in your lumbar spine lose their normal range of movement. They become restricted or “stuck” — and the muscles around them tighten in response. This is one of the most common findings we see in desk workers who come in with back pain, and it often responds well to chiropractic adjustments.

5. Stress and Tension

Mental stress doesn’t stay mental — it manifests physically. Stress increases muscle tension throughout the body, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and lower back. For desk workers who are already in a mechanically compromised position, the added muscle tension from a stressful workday compounds the problem.

What to Do About It

If your desk job is causing lower back pain, the most effective approach is a combination of chiropractic care to restore joint movement and address existing dysfunction, ergonomic improvements to reduce ongoing mechanical stress, and targeted exercises to strengthen the muscles that support your spine. At Full Potential Chiropractic, we treat desk-related back pain every day and can build a plan that works with your work schedule.
